Round 13 Results

Finalists Confirmed

The top five franchises heading into the finals series of the lucrative Bemobile Cup competition have been secured after today's round of matches. There's still the last round to played next weekend but that would not have much bearing on the finalists.
It is for sure that Agmark Gurias now on 20 points will come out as Minor premiers with SBS Muruks to finish fifth. It doesn't matter if they win or lose. The Middle spots are due to fluctuate and will be determined after completion of the last round.
Muruks were fortunate enough to escape pressure from surrendering their Premiership title prematurely, thanks to their victory and the Viper's loss.
Vipers had better points differential compared to Bombers and Eagles, who were all on 7 points heading into the games today. Unfortunately, their loss essentially puts them out of the race.
Although, Bombers won, they have to win next weekend with more than 90 points and hoping that Muruks loose to make the finals. This is very least likely so they can also be ruled out alongside Eagles.

Mioks fly over Muruks

By Jonah Ahokare - Lae Correspondent

Favourites SBS Mendi Muruks received a surprise blow from the Toyota Enga Mioks last Sunday at the Lae Rugby League Grounds. Despite recent media speculation of crisis within the club administration, the Mioks played as never before thrashing the Lae-based Mendi Muruks 18 points to 7 in front of a jam packed crowd of supporters.
Just four minutes into first half, Muruks winger Sova Milfred crossed the line to grab the first four pointer of the game. The try came as a result of classic footwork and ball handling by the Muruks backline in the likes of hitman such as Jesse Joe Parker. Conversion kick from Andrew Sam's mighty right foot added the extras setting the Muruks clearly on the front. The Mioks were able to add a two pointer after the referee awarded a penalty against the Muruks due to a high tackle on a Miok's player. Just before half-time, Muruks were able to register a point bringing their score to 7 leaving the Mioks trailing behind with 2 points.
However, the tide changed in the second half with Mioks scoring three tries courtesy of winger Amoi, half-back Mai Tom and Terry Tapako. The Mioks continue the onslaught denying the Muruks points in the second half with very tough defence and ball security.
It was a moment of joy for the Enga Mioks supporters when the full time siren wailed.
Staunch rugby league follower and Enga Governor Hon.Peter Ipatas was the proudest man on the grounds to witness his boys displaying some of the best and finest rugby league skills beating the reigning premiers, SBS Mendi Muruks 18 points to 7.

Bombers Upset Vipers

The Vipers hope for a finals football was quashed when the cellar dwellers, ATCL Bombers humbled them with a 10-4 victory.
The Bombers win forced an interesting turn for the bottom four franchises after Muruks, Vipers and Eagles all losing their respective games. Had the Muruks won, they would have comfortably cemented the fifth spot on the competition ladder with two games remaining before the finals playoff. However, their loss means they are still on fifth spot with nine points, only two points ahead of the bottom three who have mathematical chances of making the top 5, pending the results of the remaining two rounds.
Vipers fielded an unusual starting lineup especially the forwards and a couple of positional changes to the backs. Most of the regulars came-off the bench.
The first twenty minutes was ordinary with both sides displaying flamboyant football and several handling errors. Vipers were the first to score before the bombers followed to level 4-4 going into half-time.
The second half was brutal with exchanges of barnstorming runs and line breaks from both sides but neither came up with points until the final minute when Bombers scored right under the sticks to seal the match.

Week 12- Round2 Draw

Catching up with old pal @ Unitech and current Kumul Fullback, Rodrick Puname of SBS Muruks.

One Last Hope for the Eagles

It is the time of the year when finals football momentum is knocking on all doors for the semi professional Bemobile cup teams vying for a spot in the final five in October.
For Mount Hagen Bintangor Eagles; coming from a 22-12 loss to the hands of Masta Mak City Rangers in Madang last week really gives a hard time for the last year’s runner up and the game against Agmark Rabaul Gurias this weekend is set as one final hope for the Kanges.
It will be a Kange verses Kange match seeing several high profile players like Rodney Pora, Kot Kerua, Larsen Marabe, Dion Aiye and George Moni initially from Hagen left in wonder for greener pastures.
Eagles’ captain James Emm knows well that this game is a must win or face exited from finals campaign and he will rely heavily on his little general Skipper Mel, Kumul forward Benny Pamunda, George Baker, Seth Angra and up and coming star winger Tiger Amere.
A loss to the Gurias may spoil the Kanges finals hope therefore this game is set to go right down to the wire.
CIVAPC/NCD Vipers are in the same boat as Eagles and needs to win this match against shallow dwellers ATCL Lae Bombers in the local derby.

In Lae, Structural Bridging System Mendi Muruks are preparing hard for this game that will decide their fate of the three time defending champion when they take on an inform Toyota Enga Mioks at the Lae rugby league ground.

Star five eight and soon to be Kumuls Andrew Sam speaking from Lae by phone said, the boys have lost the last three games easily and the win against an inform CIVPAC/NCD Vipers in Port Moresby last week had given them an extra strength and the boys are looking forward to the match.
For once glamour team, Goroka Bintangor Lahanis, a possible final five is already in bag a win is needed as anything can happen comes finals football in October

Rangers Shoot Down Eagles

By Stanford Mul - Madang Corresponent

The Port Moresby Masta Mark Rangers displayed a near flawless display of football to dismantle cellar dwellers Bingtagor Mt Hagen Eagles 22-12 in Madang. The Rangers virtually made up of former and current kumuls showed silky ball skills to destroy the Eagles. The Rangers coordinated attack and defense left Bingtagor Mt Hagen Eagles clueless. The Eagles didn’t help their cause by making too many forced errors. It was a tight contest until the 65th minute when the Rangers ran away with the game scoring two tries in a space of 10 minutes.

Kelly Aiyok the owner of the Port Moresby Masta Mark Rangers was on hand to watch his boys put in a polished performance. Man of the match and outside centre for Masta Mark Rangers Ham Tee entertained the crowd with his blistering pace and side step to score the first try and setting up the last try by stepping and fending off 5 defenders.

Bombers continue losing streak

By Jonah Ahokare - Lae Correspondent

The Rabaul Gurias were too good beating the Bombers in front of a huge home crowd.
The boys from the East New Britain proved they are the hottest contestant vying for the Bemobile Cup this year thrashing the Bombers 12 points to 6.
Gurias were the first to put 4 points on the score board courtesy of a try from centre, Albert Patak on the eastern end of the grounds. Conversion by Rolly Matalau was unsuccessful.
About 12 minutes before half-time, the bombers were awarded a penalty after a high tackle call
against the Gurias. Young gun Mark Mexico added the much needed two points to seal the score 6 points to 2 in favour of the Gurias at half-time.
Twelve minutes into second half, the man from Balimo, Ricky Sibiya crashed into the try line to score under the uprights for the visitors. Half-back Matalau added the extras to set the Gurias in front.
Ten minutes before full time, 2nd year engineering student from Unitech, Sens, barged his way to the try line to score for the bombers. It was a great one-man effort from this younster. The conversion kick by lanky Max Rumanong was unsuccessful leaving the bombers trailing behind with 6 points.
The game was exciting to watch as both teams displayed great ball works and runs. The forward packs for both teams made some very good bone crunching tackles and hitups in the mud-filled turf. Gurias held on to win the match.

Muruks Rising

A resurgent Muruks team was evident in their performance against the Vipers yesterday at the Port Moresby Rugby League ground, winning 20-16.

The Muruks were full of class in the opening exchanges, scoring three unanswered tries, two of which were unconverted before Vipers replied with a converted try and a penalty goal to trail 8-14 into half-time.

Vipers cam back strongly in the second half to score twice to lead 16-15. Sam Maniat failed to add the extra four points. Muruks lone point came from an Andrew Sam drop goal.

The ensuing minutes to fulltime saw tit for tat as both sides desperately searching to score until Muruks did in the last five minutes but Sam again failed to convert. He made up for that with a field goal taking them to 20-16 defeating the Vipers.

Mioks Still Intact

The sacked Toyota Mioks officials.
From left to right: Charles Akato (sacked trainer), Toksy Nema ( brought in back to the team as the head coach), Timothy Lepa (Sacked team manager), John Passingan (sacked coach) and Dr Issac Asa ( named as the current team manager and the team doctor as well).

The Toyota Enga Mioks are confident to meet an inform Goroka Bintangor Lahanis in round 11 of the beombile cup competition at the Johnson Siki oval in Wabag.

The Mioks players are still intact despite media reports of a possible walk following the call from the suspended team officials that includes team manger Timothy Lepa, Charlie Akato (trainer) and head coach John Passingan.

One of the PNG’s daily leading newspaper Post Courier quoted an inside source that leaked the information was not true and has been directed by sacked team manager Timothy Lepa.
“Lepa forged everything up and made his own thing claiming that we will follow them if Mioks board do not reinstate them to the team was not true. We are still intact and whatever the management issues , they have to be dealt there accordingly and not with us players. We came here to play rugby and not involving ourself with top management level issues,” Mioks team captain David Ako said.
Some players confirmed from Wabag that they had never sat or signed anything that of a petition to walk out the club.
The daily paper reported on Wednesday this week that players have threatened to pull out of the team in protest of the sacking of Mr Lepa, head coach John Passingan and trainer Charlie Akato was not true.
Mioks team captain David Ako whose name was mentioned of a possible pull out said yesterday (today) in Wabag that the petition given by the named individual was not true. Ako was also supported by five eight James Maninga and fullback Thomas Kumgi who were brought into the Enga Provincial media department to air their frustration.
“We had never signed the petition stating our possible march out in protest of their sacking. We also had never sat or met with Lepa as he was in Lae and we were in Wabag. What was petitioned to the Mioks board was not true and our signatures were forged to make the petition looked real,” the players said.
Ako said the boys came to Wabag to play rugby league and not involve in the administration matters. “We are focused on our remaining games and I must assure our major sponsor Ela Motors, and the minor sponsors that my players are intact and we will not tolerate any of such behavior,” Ako said.
Maninga and Kumgi also gave the same sentiments saying any team that wants to meet Mioks has to think twice as the Mioks players are intact and are looking forward to playing Goroka Bintangor Lahanis in Wabag.
Captain Ako said most of the players named in the petition are intact and they have been named in the team that will play against the Goroka Bintangor Lahanis this weekend. The possible squad to play Lahanis is Thomas Kumgi, Jason Tali, Asua Awani, Joseph Tei, Nick Lambu, James Maninga, Mai Tom, Timothy Clement, Mose Lam, Kerry Tapako, David Loko, Wanpis James and skipper Ako.
Ako in confirming the first 13 players said the management issue was for the board to look at and not to involve the players.
“What was stated was not true and we are still intact and looking forward to playing Lahanis this weekend,” Ako said.

Lahanis soar over Muruks

By Jonah Ahokare - Lae Correspondent

The Bintangor Lahanis scored, with just under a minute remaining before fulltime to snatch victory. This game really turned the heat on with both sides equally determined to get the two points on offer.

Muruks were the first to score through former Lahanis hitman, Paulus Mondo, twenty minutes into the first half. The try was successfully converted by Andrew Sam. Lahanis replied with a try to evergreen captain, Glen Nami, who converted to take the score 6-all.

Soon after, Terry Toa crossed for Muruks but Sam failed to convert. Just before half time, Lahanis veteran, Sigfred Gande touched down but the kick was unsuccessful. The score remained 10-all when they went for break.

Muruks collected two points from a penalty, three minutes after play resumed, taking them two points ahead. This was short-lived when former Bombers veteran John Milba crossed for the Lahanis. Walter Hasu managed to add the extras.

Muruks center, Bobby Yakopa crashed at the eastern end of the tryline to earn the much needed 4 points but Sam again failed to pot the goal kick leaving the score 16-all before the men from Nokondi land sealing the match in the dying minute, courtesy of a try to their little general, Bafinu Illa which was successfully converted.

Lahanis Tries: Glen Nami (1), Sigfred Gande (1), John Milba (1),
Bafinu Illai (1)
Goals: G. Nami, W Hasu, (3/4)

Muruks Tries: Paulus Mondo (1), Terry Toa (1), Bobby Yakopa (1),
Goals: Andrew Sam (2/3)

Rangers diffuse Bombers

The Masta Mak city Rangers escaped an early scare inflicted by the ACTL Bombers in front of a moderate crowd in Port Moresby yesterday afternoon.

The Bombers led 6-4 going into the break. They played better football then but did not repeat that sort of performance in the second half. Lack of possession cost them dearly. They never reached the fifth tackle in all their sets and turned over possession easily .

The Rangers capitalized on their errors to win the match 18-6.

Man of the Match was the two try hero, Ata Bina Wabo (Charlie Wabo's younger brother) and presented by Bemobile CEO, Roger Blott.

Rangers Tries: Samson Ene (1), Ata Bina (2), Charles Onguglo (1),
Goals: Benjamin Tomben (1/4)

Bombers Tries: Samson Ninge (1)
Goals: 1/2

Support is finally here

Thank God that finally there seems to be support coming for this voluntary work that I had to put up with including my few correspondents over the last nine weeks.

Bemobile has finally decided to throw its support by providing Media Passes for all corespondents in venues hosting bemobilecup matches. Unfortunately, I can't get in touch with some of the correspondents that have expressed interest. If you know of someone that might be interested, please email me and advise. I'll enlist them as correspondents.

I also bought a domain name last week so the new web address for this blog is http://bemobilecup.sportspng.com. The domain new domain is to cater for other sporting areas that I'd like to blog on including the Pacific Cup and PNG Games.

I'd like to personally thank you the visitor especially for your support in terms of blog hits, comments and suggestions. Thanks alot....Much appreciated.

Players Lacking Discipline

It is very unbecoming to see two senior players in one of the bemobilecup teams leaving the Camp to go out clubing last Friday night, just a day away from their game on Sunday.

I was out at the Junction Night Club with some mates. We were at the Members area looking out to other patrons and to my surprise, there were these two players (name withheld) among the crowd. Since, my friend is a member and it happened that we both know the guys, we had to invite them to join us.

I thought they were injured so they are not going to play on Sunday. When I asked to confirm, what I learnt was pathetically lame. They said, they were frustrated with the management over some issues which they didn't discuss.

For goodness sake, is this a better way to vent your frustration? I mean these guys are the most highly paid players in the competition and sponsors expert them to deliver what they are investing on. You can't go around drinking like this and take a days rest to go out and play. This is not on.

If we are to field a team in the NRL, then we have a major task at hand to clean up our backyard. I suggest all franchises in the Bemobile cup competition to include personal development and self discipline courses for players as part of their training as well. Perhaps the PNGRFL & PNGNRL to come up with a decision to make it Mandatory for clubs to adopt such regime.

I've heard of similar cases from other clubs and even the Kumuls World Cup Team about off-field player misconduct. That is from reliable sources, particularly from players themselves. Now that I have a medium to disseminate this info, I won't hesitate to report.

Lahanis Win Again In Madang

By Standford Mul - Madang Correspondent

The battle of the Bingtagor franchises went down to the wire with the Bingtagor sponsored team from Goroka downing their brother team, Bingtagor Mt Hagen Eagles 8-4.

The game started with heavy exchange of big tackles and hard running from both teams. As the game went on Bingtagor Mt Hagen Eagles upped their tempo and made inroads in the Lahanis defence however, poor ball handling and some dubious calls by the referee cost them the game scoring only one try from more than four line breaks.

The Bingtagor Goroka Lahanis came back firing in the second half but couldn’t break the Eagles defence. It was only in the dying stages of the game after gaining consecutive penalties from Bingtagor Mt Hagen Eagle’s infringements were they able to score.

It was only fitting that local boy and Lahanis blockbusting second rower Siegfried Gande scoring the winning try with minutes left on the clock.

Round 2 - Week9 Results

Gurias and Vipers Round Up

The Vipers had it all leading 22-20 with seconds remaing before fulltime but Gurias were well too determined to fight till the final hooter and that paid off, courtesy of a try to Captain and Man of the Match George Moni that sealed the match 24-22.

The game was a thriller and entertaining unlike the past two weekends where there were instances of riot and violence.

On hand to present the man of the match was our RL legend, Marcus Bai.

Gurias Tries: Romalus Mago (1). Albert Patak(1), Larzen Marabe(1), George Moni (1), O Tongap(1)
Goals: Chanell Aquila(2/5)

Vipers: Tries: Kevin Frank (2), Elizah Ryong(2), Oala Frank(1)
Goals: Collin Aruna (1/5).

Belated Round2 - Week8 Updates

You may have noticed that I haven't posted updates for last weekend's games. I wasn't so keen on reporting after violence erupted from the match between the Rangers and Vipers.

I go to the games regularly, paying my own way in to provide updates to this blog but what I witnessed last weekend was totally disheartening.

It was very shameful for certain vipers players and officials to instigate the melee by attempting to confront the referee, John Ropa right after fulltime. Their actions have caused spectator uproar with cans, sticks and whatever that could be found to be hurled at the match officials and rangers players.

Those involved have been suspended now. This serves them right and I must commend the Vipers Franchise owner, Mr. Augustine Mano to come to terms with the penalties and continue to encourage the young players to play strong and hard despite all these drama.

Similar incidents have been reported in the game between the Eagles and Mioks in Wabag and Muruks vs Bombers in Lae. I hope those responsible should be dealt with accordingly.

Here are some of the pics that I took last Sunday.

Change of Attitude is required

By Concerned Ave

Whilst the bemobile Cup matches are tough and indicative of the professional standard we want to establish, obviously attitudes will have to change as well, if last Sunday's violent ending to matches in Lae, Port Moresby and Wabag are any indication. We all know, the man in the middle who wields the whistle is the law and his decisions are final. Years of playing the game would condition you for that. But our guys still want to question ref's decisions, point fingers, lay hold, abuse, threaten and assault. And here we are trying to make a bid to enter NRL. I am so ashamed of the behaviour of some of the senior players in Port Moresby last Sunday. It makes me sick to see that nothing about profesional behaviour and professionalism is getting through to them. I have a good mind to recruit overseas players and the guys who are bring the game into disrepute better not saying anything about bias against local homegrown product because it would be a waste of time.

Their very behaviour is what scares the paying supporter and the sponsors and potential sponsors away.

We don't need those riff-raffs in the game; they are a disgrace to their teams, families, franchise and supporters.

Let's weed them out or change our total outlook. Otherwise, the Aussies will put up a brickwall along the Torres Strait with the bold sign NO to PNG's bid to enter a team in the NRL.

Website the way to go

By Richard Hansworth - Source: Post Courier

I AM a former PNG resident now living in Yorkshire, United Kingdom.
I have always had a special heart for Papua New Guinea and follow closely about your rugby league which is a religion out there I've noticed.
I happen to stumble upon this website http://bemobilecup.blogspot.com which features match updates, pictures and videos for the local Bemobile cup comepetition. I can say that this is a tremendous effort put in by an individual to promote PNG rugby league to world. Comments by his fellow Papua New Guineans and others in PNG and abroad have been overwhelming with praises for his efforts and I couldn't agree more. It's about time somebody realised that so it's great to see somebody has taken the step. I know PNG is bidding to enter the tough Australian NRL and such a step to promote your rugby league to the world through such medium is a perfect start. You are marketing your local players to talent scouts and other interested bodies abroad.
I'll play a part by spreading the word around for this website to my contacts so that they can take a peek at the blog and of course PNG rugby league. I encourage more video on the blog. I saw one that has been posted for the game between Rangers and Vipers and was so impressed. The blogger mentioned that he'll post some more vidoes soon pending arrangments with Kundu2. Hope that's get sorted sooner so I can enjoy more videos.

Lahanis Outmuscle Bombers.

By Stanford Mul - Madang Correspondent

This was the match the Madang community was waiting for all year and it finally came to the tourist town. Crowd converged to watch the first Bemobile cup match for the year in Madang as early as 9am on Sunday morning. The Ron Albert rugby league oval was packed to capacity to watch the match between Bingator Goroka Lahanis and ACTL Lae Bombers.
The crowds were given their money’s worth of entertainment when the big men from both teams exchanged big hits and strong runs. This led to a dust up between the two teams in the opening 15 minutes but was quickly taken under control by local Bemobile referee Paul Poka. The Lahanis pack led by Nigel Hukula and local boy Sigfred Gande were cheered on by the vocal crowd created havoc for the ACTL Lae Bombers. This allowed the Lahanis backline to run freely and create defensive headaches for the Bombers.
The ACTL Lae Bombers were the first to score when a bomb was spilled by the Lahanis’s fullback. Unfortunately, that was the only bright point for the ACTL bombers as the Lahanis turned on another gear in the second half to score 3 unanswered tries leaving the ACTL Lae Bombers stunned and gasping for air. Bintagor Goraoka Lahanis tireless lock Glen Nami who was everywhere on the park was awarded the man of the match. The matched ended with Bintagor Goraoka Lahanis winning 17-6.

Thank you Telikom EVDO - two thumbs up

By Whiteline Madness via email

Syl,

mate apologies for not posting. I've been at the games but my web at home has been struggling - thank goodness for the Telikom EVDO.

Can I just make a comment first on the recent Mioks/Vipers game on Sunday. I would think that both coaches would have the proffessionalism and respect the game enough to remove the outright thuggery that was evident in the game. The Lock (#13) for the MIOKS and the reserve player (#16) for the VIPERS do not come close to calling themselves football players. We love the game for its physicality but head butting opponents and deliberately trying to cause physical harm to players is best left to the off season and village leagues that selectors for each club found both these thugs from - in fact they don't deserve to playe there either. Both players were put on report. Lets hope they get what they deserve.
Other then the fact that VIPERS won, the game never reached any great hights I thought - Dick Nap for the Vipers though was a deservant man of the match - fantastic meters for his team each time he took the ball up - It certainly helps when the defencive line waits at the 10 and doesn't move up.
And a word of advice for the young MIOK "kumul" in waiting coming off the bench (#17). He'd better get his head fixed on playing the game well or else he'll just be another pretender beating his chest for the Kumul jumper. He certainly has some skill and size but a little more simple work ethic would serve him well. Stop looking for the big hits and big plays - if he gets his act together he'll certainly bring some great dynamics to the back row - Watch His Space !

Just on Masta Maks performance against the Lahanis and the Mioks in their last 2 Port Moresby games. Those games were lost because of bad coaching and nothing else. Bad coaching and management always shows in poor performance - There was no way Masta Mak could have beaten the Lahanis especially when you don't rotate your forwards. The Rangers pack were out on their toes nearly with no rest or rotation - The Lahanis had a go forward pack with an average hight of 5'10 and 110kg - and they were coached to near perfection that day. And add to this the fact the Garnet Auo had something to prove against Masta Mak after they led him along at the start of the season - Didn't he tear the Rangers to shreds - the question has to be asked why he hasn't seen the the wash tag of a kumul jersey.
Lets leave the Mioks game loss to superstar tantrams and a lack of committment by some of the players and I can add a lack of player depth planning by again the Coach and Management. And I can say the refereeing has been spot on so the Rangers management should leave the swipes at the referees in the paper to themselves.

The Vipers to beat Masta Mak if Sam Maniat takes the line on a little bit more with players in motion either side of him - preferably Dick Nap and Luke Kolalio - both got good foot speed and both strong. Vipers centers are spot on too. Kevin Frank and Captain doing a good job in punching the line in all their games (and please Chris Enara don't waste a spot for a decent young interchange with the thug 'one hit wonder' who was wearing #16 (Philip Kumye) last week).

Round 7 Results

Former Hagen Bintangor Eagles center and current Toyota Enga Mioks winger Jason Tali is tackled by CIVPAC/NCD Vipers in round seven of the bemobile cup played on Sunday at the Lloyd Robson Oval in Port Moresby. In the other results Masta Mak City Rangers were humbled by host Agmark Rabaul Gurias at the Kalabond ‘grave yard’ in Kokopo while Structural Bridging System Mendi Muruks came back to the winner’s circle with a 20-6 defeating of Mount Hagen Bintangor Eagles in Lae.

Goroka Bintangor Lahanis gave Madang rugby league fans their money's worth when they thrashed PNG-Australian Trade Center Limited Lae Bombers 17-6 at the Ron Albert Oval in Madang.

Gurias now takes a four points clear lead after round seven of the competition with 12 points followed by Goroka Bintangor Lahanis on 8, Masta Mak City Rangers 8, SBS Mendi Muruks 7, Toyota Enga Mioks 6, CIVPAC/NCD Vipers 6, Mount Hagen Bintangor Eagles 6 and ATCL Lae Bombers 3.

Repetative Content on Bemobile website

To all readers of this blog.

This is to advise that the Bemobile website has finally decided to provide some similar sort of information that can be found here.

For the record, when this blog went live, the Bemobile website was non-existent. I actually sent an email to their PR office through Stella Bita, asking them to do up a website so that I could link their site here. I also requested permission to use their logo and just recently, sought sponsorship for prepaid cards and match tickets as I wanted to award them as prizes for an online tipping competition that I intend to run. To date, I haven't received a word.

They managed to put up a website soon after, which is claimed by Robert's, commentary on Masalai Blog as "man, for such a big brand they have a very below average website."

Just in case you may be wondering if I'm providing redundant information here. The content found here are original. I have initiated this concept and I'm willing to continue. I have a good readership so I'll ensure to provide the kind of content that they have influenced to be made available.

A word of appreciation to those readers who have spread the news about this blog and also for their comments and suggestions. I'm so glad to see the increase in the number of hits. It has already passed three thousand and still growing so I'd like to encourage all visitors to help promote this blog.

Richard Wagambie a defined Rugby League Coach

By Emmanuel Uki - (MM Rangers Fullback)

Former PNG Kumuls Test Center and current Kumuls rookie assistant Coach, Richard Wagambie has proved his worth as a capable PNG Kumuls coach.

In 2007 he was hand picked by the former Governor of National Capital District, Wari J Vele to coach his now defunct Franchise, the Wari Vele Raiders in the then SP Cup competition.

It was my debut year and as a new kid in the premier competition, I learnt that he was a no non-sense coach. I can describe him as a defined coach because the team (Raiders) he was in charge of was the wooden spooner of the 2006 SP Cup Competition. Upon his inclusion as the head coach, he came up with 2 set goals which he wanted the team to achieve throughout season.

1. Long Term Goal – The team should make it into the Finals and not remain as wooden spooners.

2. Short Term Goal – Concentrate on winning week in week out and take every game as a grand final.

To achieve these goals, Richard was more practical in his coaching tactics. Instead of just issuing instructions like most coaches, he gets involved in how to apply the latest drills and skills of rugby league by demonstrating them himself. He would yell and swear like nobody’s business when we continue to do same mistakes in training until we get it right. I also wonder sometimes why he gets himself so drenched and dirty instead of avoiding the mud during rainy training sessions.

Any way, I was glad he saw the talent in me and chose me as the first choice fullback from among other 3 experienced custodians namely Yamo Tau (Former Vipers), Fugi Duri (Former Brian Bell Bulldogs), Romalus Mago,(Former Kumuls). “Nobody in the team was above the guidelines set by the board,” he would say. He’s an advocate of disciplined football, this was evident when he had to sideline a Senior Player Andrew “hit man” Norman for being drunk and absent for training. Even though it was round two and Andrew was a key attacker and a strong defender he was slapped with a 2 match suspension. However without Andrew, he encouraged us that we should not depend on Andrew everything we learnt should be applied fully. We managed to achieve both of our goals that year by slipping into the top 5 and lost to Lahanis due to many injuries sustained by bulk of our players during the previous game.

Last year he was asked by Enga Mioks to take up the vacant coaching position. I asked him why he had to turn down the offer and this is what he said, “Going to Wabag is not a problem to me but what matters most is my Family.” Richard has a family who is always supportive of his efforts in terms of developing Rugby League. He was contracted to play in France but escaped back to PNG because his wife was expecting their first son, Brendan. This shows how loyal he is to his family, so staying away from now a bigger group is something he wouldn’t prefer as he has an obligation as a father to all those lovely kids.

Whilst unattached to an SP cup team he turned to focus on his local Club, Paga Panthers. His efforts paid off well when both the Panther’s senior and junior division reached the grand final of Port Moresby Rugby League (PRL) where the A grade team won the premiership.

I am proud he has been called in to assist Mark Mom in the recent test match against Fiji. He has a great impact in coaching so his inclusion is no mistake.

In years to come I think he’ll be referred to as the “PNG’s Version of Wayne Bennett.

Ipatas celebrates birthday with Mioks win

By Emmanuel Uki - Masta Mak City Rangers Fullback

Rugby League Die Hard Politician and financial backer for Toyota Enga Mioks Bemobile Cup team, Governor Peter Ipatas was presented with a timely intangible present of 2 competition points.

The Action Governor Celebrated his 51st Birthday in style. He described his celebration as a great coincidence. “30 years in politics is a great achievement for me" described Ipatas, “I wouldn’t want something extra special as a birthday present for my birthday rather than a mere two points from a more disciplined and organized Mioks Club this season," stressed Ipatas.

He congratulated his team for a brave effort put forward to topple the Mighty Rangers.

As a player from the opposing team (Rangers) who battled for the two points during the day I was overwhelmed by the reception. We were invited in advance before the game, as we use the facilities in Bluff Inn Motel (his family business) located outside Port Moresby (17 Mile) for the home games. According to Ipatas it was his first ever celebration in his entire life. He not in one time celebrated his birthday in the past 50 years, hence, I for one felt so special for being part of a well known and respected politicians’ Birthday celebration.

We the Rangers boys were really down but with a couple of drinks we forgot what happened during the day and got along well with the Mioks. The food was awesome, we surely had a great night cracking jokes and jumped into the dancing floor whenever a favourite number was belted by the live band.

I really admire Ipatas for his passion for the greatest game of all, rugby league. He deserves credit for always having time available from his busy schedule to follow the game closely week in week out.

Kumuls down Fiji again

The Telikom Papua New Guinea Kumuls proved to be the better side today by thrashing the Fiji Batis 14-2 here in Port Moresby. It is the second Test loss for the Batis after succumbing to their fist defeat in Mount Hagen on Wednesday.

Both sides were equally determined, but the Fijians were terrible with ball security that cost them the game.

The Batis put on a tremendous defensive effort by nullifying PNG's big forwards. The game was evenly contested with PNG scoring the only try in the first half through rampaging outside center, Larson Marabe with Mai Tom converting before they went for the break.

The second half saw PNG kicking a penalty goal to extend the lead to 8-0. PNG then got penalized in from of their goal line that allowed Fiji to opt for the two points and trailed 2-8. Kumuls finally posted another try in the last 10 minutes courtesy of an individual brilliance by Benjamin Tomben John with Tom adding the extras.

The Man of the Match was awarded to Larson Marabe. He certainly deserved it for being the most explosive player all through out the eighty minutes.

Kumuls romp Batis

The Papua New Guinea Kumuls have restored lost pride by running over the touring Fiji Batis 54-10 at Kagamuga Showground in Mount Hagen this afternoon.

The Batis side boosted with 8 players from last year's world cup squad that made it to the semi-finals against Australia did not seem to have made much difference given the scoreline. The Kumuls comfortably overcame them.

Our National Team having been relegated from 4th to 6th spot on the International Ranking by Fiji and France after the world cup now have something to smile about.

The win certainly helps to build confidence in the team to take on the Batis in the second fixture this Saturday at PRL and most importantly, the Pacific cup at the end of the year.

The Pacific cup will see PNG battling it out with Fiji, Samoa and Tonga with the top team to be included in next year's Four Nations Series, an expansion of the Tri-Nations between Australia, England and New Zealand.

Congratulations to the boys for raising our heads. We've got to do it again this weekend and hopefully at the end of the year.

Go Kumuls...Take em on.

Muruks - Puname to run for Kumuls

Mabey & Johnson Muruks, now known as Structural Bridging Systems (SBS) Muruks, dynamic fullback, Rodrick Puname will get his baptism of fire when he dons his debut Kumuls jumper today to take on the visiting Fiji Batis at the Kagamuga Show ground in Mount Hagen.

Puname's promotion to the national team is no surprise. Having played against him at Unitech SRC league in Lae, I noticed, that he's got talent, just like Emmanuel Uki, another product of the league.

Both Uki and Puname have braced for selection and have performed consistently well over the last few rounds but it's the Muruk that finally got the Selectors' call.

Good on you Rodney. All the best to you and the rest of the Kumul team.

Vipers Rearing

The Civpac N.C.D vipers have finally broken the four-game losing streak with a hammering over the PNGATCL Bombers, 22-4 in Lae. The vipers who have been swamped with talents but failed to register points have finally made it.

I had a chance to be briefed by one of their new recruit, Emmanuel Kunjin, former Bintangor Eagles hard-man and kumul prospect.

Vipers had a field day, romping the bombers with 5 unanswered tries before the B52s replied with one in the dying minutes.

The win has been attributed to their forwards laying the foundation with solid hit ups and tackles with better decoy runs to give their outside backs enough room to create opportunities to post points.

Coach Chris Enara was tremendous in calling timely interchanges that kept their work horses firing on all-fours.

The Vipers camp is now full of confidence after their stellar performance in Lae and would like to repeat that when they take on the red-hot Bintangor Lahanis in Goroka.

Gene in Town

PNG's prominent Rugby League export to UK Super League, Stanley Gene was a notable Official among the Lahanis coaching staff. Stanely slipped quitely into the country and was with the Lahanis Team that flew in to play against hosts, Masta Mak City Rangers. Stanley, a product of Lahanis of the 1990s was quiet and soft spoken when approached. I was privileged to meet and actually talk to this living legend of PNG Rugby League. He sustained a broken bone on his left hand and will be out for this super league season.

Caught in the Middle

Standing along the sideline, watching my team mates playing in opposing colors was something that caught me in awe today.

This afternoon as usual, I was out at PRL to cover this week's game between the Masta Mak Rangers and Bintangor Lahanis. To my surprise, there was this familiar face in jumper no.4 for the Apos. It was Garnet Auwo, my teamate from Kone Tigers.

Two weeks prior to the bemobile cup season kick off, I was playing alongside Emmanuel Uki and Garnet in Kone Tigers colors here in POMRFL. He left for Goroka after the Rangers who initially called for his service snubbed him.

I personally know a bulk of Rangers players and obviously, my support would have deviated that way but having Garnet on the Goroka side kept me in the balance so I opted to be neutral and wished for the best team to win.

The game progressed well with Uki scoring two of the rangers five tries and Garnet with one for the visitors' seven touch downs. Both were in devastating form. Manu was exceptional, with some superb hit ups and scintillating line breaks that resulted in tries. Few of his trade mark charges this time went a bit astray. He also suprised me with his kicking abilities, where he managed to put a nice grubber 20 m out from the Lahanis territory for the winger to score. He also potted a crucial goal kick about 20m out and 10m in from touch. It was his day on the field. He surely reminded the national selectors of his talents. I wonder how the selectors overlooked such a demolishing fullback PNGRL has to offer. Maybe as Skipper Mel (Eagles half-back) puts it, the Kumul jumper is predetermined for the same people...or recycled players.

Garnet, a former Kumul on the other hand was great with a ferocious fend on Rangers winger Alova Varo and muscling up against another two defenders to score one of Lahanis's decisive tries in the final ten minutes that got them home.

Both teams displayed brilliant structured football. I shall commend the Rangers especially for defending well without eight of their stars who are out for representative duties to play against the touring Fiji Batis. The new bloods brought into the team delivered but I think, fatigue in the last quarter of the game cost them. I guess it would have been a different result had the interchange bench used optimally.

If you had been following this blog, While Line Madness has commented on Lahanis to test the wingers out. Well I guess he got it nail on the hand. The Left winger, Steven Neng, was okay but his partner on the right did not defend well. The notable one was the miss tackle on Garnet Auwo, that cost the Rangers.

All in all, a tightly contested game, but Lahanis were too strong in the dying minutes to come out on top. Their little general, Bafinu Illai who has been the main orchestrator for most part of the game is my choice for Man of the Match.

I eat my words

Francis Ray and the flock that flew from the nest were right on their game in Port Moresby.
Again the Eagles should shoot themselves for lost opportunities. Biggest problem in the game...no one straightens up attack. Eagles had so much of play in the last 20 minutes of the game. Some hard running straight runners would have put them in between the uprights no problems. Dominic Angra of the Eagles needs more ball in his hands - to good a player to be sitting out on the wing. Put him at full back and in attack come nipping around the halves. These guys are quality halves - that you can say for the Eagles, especially "7"-Good kicking game, and good committment to the end.
Having said that. Rangers can be beaten on the back of good completions and good kick chase. Don't think forwards can do that much damage if they keep turning around back to their 20m line. Goroka should test the wingers out. Other then Emmanuel I don't think the winngers did much work - they seemed to be relying on Uki too much - turn them around and make them work from the corners. Up and in, in defence rather then allowing room on the outside - They like running across the park and picking the chances on the outside both the back rowers (Kuike) and centres (Ene). Defend them pushing up quick on the outside and in and force Benjamin (9) and Onguglo (6) to make play. Give Benjamin a little more defencive work while his up at hooker, see if he can do so much running on the back of 20 tackles a half. He's a good player but don't give him to much respect.

Vipers-Eagles game.

Chris Enara of the Vipers - Was it me or did he rotate his halves and hookers 20 times in that game.
The game was sluggish enough for the players but when you're rotating your pivots around like that how can you get some command in the game.
He has got to get his bench system worked out. Poor Brendan Lulubo looked likely late in the second half but looked down the right line and he had 3 of his players running to the Vipers bench 20 meters out from the Eagles tryline - what's doing there Chris Enara and Joe Walters. Maybe a video session on how not to take players off when attacking 20 meters out from the line.

Eagles to win against Masta Mak if they straighten up their attack and minimise errors. And please Eagles, have a word to your hooker otherwise Benji John and Bina will will command the ruck for Masta Mak.
On pure 'Point to Prove' emotion I'd say Eagles to win. Let Ambassador Francis, Ham, Enoch and Steven earn their pay this weekend Eagles.
Great work with the blog....

Mioks Eat own words

By Henry Morabang The National

TOYOTA Mioks ate their own words after they were buried 22-10 at “the graveyard” by NGIP Agmark Guria in the third round of the bemobile Cup last Sunday at Kalabond Oval in Kokopo. Mioks team manager Timothy Lepa had said last week they would be burying Guria in the ashes of Mt Tavurvur and turn the graveyard into a paradise, where visiting teams were able to be victorious. But Guria proved them wrong, making them the latest victim at the Kalabond field.

Rangers Paid Handsomely

The Mast Mark City Rangers are the highly paid players in the current bemobile cup competion. It is purported, players are paid K400 per match plus bonuses for top perfomers. When you equate that to a fortnightly wage, it adds to K800 or more. This is more than what many avarage working Papua New Guineans are earning.

This goes to show how passionate an individual like Mr. Kelly Aiyok (Rangers Franchise owner), is in promoting rugby league by providing lucrative offers for players. In return, he expects the players to perform or be axed. In that way, he ensures, players put in their required effort and aim to excel.

Mr. Aiyok has also been tremendous in supporting Port Moresby's Suburban Rugby League (second tier competition) and the Masta Mark Trials which featured the Rangers, Vipers and Aroma Coast with Cash Sponsorhip. It's wonderful how one can dig deep into his own pocket to develop our beloved game.

Good on you Mr. Aiyok. If only, all other franchise owners and corporations are like minded, then I guess, we would develop rugby league by folds.

Emanuel Uki joins Bemobilecup blog Team

Awesome, awesome, awesome.....Guess what, the Masta Mark City Rangers fullback Emanuel Uki has expressed interest to be part of the blog team. He was so full of praises after visiting the site. He was grateful that at least someone has finally taken the initative to set up such a blog to expose our game to the global rugby league community on the web.

Mr. Uki will now directly feed this blog with first hand information on how the Rangers fare in all their games. I hope to have players from other franchises follow suit and have their say.

I believe this will create an environment where supporters can get to express their views and concerns to players and their teams.

Be cautioned that abusive comments will not be tolerated as they have to be reviewed before publishing.
